Earth Week 2011 was dedicated to raise awareness on environmental issues and institutionalize this event on our UAM campus!  Our UAM-CUSE student organization DO worked with the Department of Design and Visual Communication, Medicine, and Law to make this celebration a success for our university community. The Earth week focus for 2011 was water!

Earth Week 2011 began with a 5K run organized by Managua Runners. Over 60 UAM-CUSE students and professors used the run to promote a greener planet. During the rest of the week, over 150 students participated in conferences conducted by nationally known speakers as well as activities that included a movie marathon, recycling, and a sale of environmentally friendly foods.

The lead conference, Water and Education, was presented by RTI Director, Carolina Castro, who talked about the need for water in schools, a vital element in improving student attendance, especially for female students. Access to water in schools is related to educational quality which is so important for developing nations. Many UAM-CUSE students volunteered to help raise funds for this social program initiative seeking to bring water to over 11,000 public schools in Nicaragua.  It is hoped that this project will begin in the Fall of 2011.

Earth Week 2010 successfully raised awareness on environmental issues on UAM Campus! Organized by DO, UAM-CUSE student organization, Earth Week was full of interesting and fun activities with over 260 students participating in different events including conferences by national and international speakers, body painting, recycling, a  movie marathon, and an environmental concert toward the end of the week!

The week began with a series of conferences on different environmental topics! Our first speaker was Mr. Luis Agurto, Sr., founder and CEO of Pestec, a family-owned pest control business serving the greater San Francisco Bay Area since 1986. Mr. Agurto used his innovated prevention-based practices to provide effective pest control while reducing pesticide use and risk. Pestec, with its award-winning and nationally recognized IPM program, was the first pest management provider to become Green Shield Certified, a national certification with stringent IPM performance standards as well as the first to receive EcoWise certification, an IPM certification operated by the Association of Bay Area Governments. Mr. Agurto was appointed to the California Structural Pest Control Board by Governor Schwarzenegger.
